Apple Annie, Forget It - Internet Annie, Marry Me!
June 19th, 2009Living in Las Vegas brings one open to all kinds of possibilities. For the past three years I have worked exclusively with small businesses repairing, restoring and enhancing their web presence. But recently, an out of work friend approached me about selling apples on the street corner. He wanted to know if creating a website for a street vendor was worth the trouble. Hummmm, I told him. It’s not about the website anymore it’s about marketing your site; that’s the issue.
Let’s face it, almost anyone can create a simple website. But designing a site promoting and marketing your product or service is harder than a new entrepreneur could ever imagine. Todays search engines are smarter than the average web designer and know when they are being taken advantage of.
Well, back to Apple Annie. In 1930 the International Apple Shippers Association had an oversupply of fruits in their warehouses. With an overabundance of perishable apples and a stroke of genius they decided to clear out their inventory by selling apples on credit to the unemployed. Yes, On Credit! As a result the unemployed made money, the warehouses were emptied and selling apples on a street corner became one of the lasting icon of the Great Depression. In 1961, Apple Annie became a character in a movie called “Pocketful of Miracles” and well you can lookup the rest because Apple Annie, now Internet Annie is your friend.
What does this all have to do with promoting an online website? Everything! Internet marketing is about getting thousands of street vendors (or online sites) to help you sell your apples before they rot in the warehouse. Get married to Internet Annie’s. It’s not easy or free but it works. Think about it?
And about that apple stand, in both Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada (which butts up against Las Vegas) street vending is illegal unless the business is conducted on private property. Besides in this time and age the health department would have a stroke!
